Post-war townhouse remodelled

Facing a garden square, this well mannered post-war London townhouse forms part of a terrace laid out to the original generous Georgian plot widths and street pattern as master planned by Minoprio & Spencely in the 1960’s with detailed design undertaken by C.H. Elsom. Only discrete minor alterations to the exteriors are permitted by the Hyde Park Estate, resulting in a development, 40 years on, which maintains a distinct architectural coherence and sense of urbane substance.

The passage of time has seen significant changes in the way that people inhabit their homes; and to their expectations in terms of layout and specification. In this context, FORM were commissioned to completely refurbish and discretely reconfigure the house, creating high quality 21st century living space. The original staircase has been remodelled with a sensuously detailed solid balustrade and polished stainless steel handrail which rises sinuously through the house, linking the spaces & terminating below a newly-introduced frameless clerestory. Previously cellular spaces have been reconfigured to create an open-plan split-level living floor and a luxurious owner’s suite. New interventions including the kitchen and bespoke joinery were all designed and detailed by FORM, to reflect and enhance the qualities of the original architecture.
